Large Diameter Flanges for Industrial Piping Projects

Large diameter flanges are used where piping systems exceed the size range covered by ASME B16.5.

For example:

NPS 24″ → ASME B16.5
NPS 26″ → ASME B16.47
NPS 30″ → ASME B16.47
NPS 36″ → ASME B16.47
NPS 42″ → ASME B16.47
NPS 48″ → ASME B16.47
NPS 60″ → ASME B16.47
ASME B16.47 was developed for large-diameter steel flanges and covers NPS 26 through NPS 60.

Available ASME B16.47 Flange Sizes

JS FITTINGS supplies large-diameter flanges within the ASME B16.47 size range, from NPS 26″ through NPS 60″, subject to the selected flange type, material and pressure class.

Typical requirements include:

26″ | 28″ | 30″ | 32″ | 34″ | 36″ | 38″ | 40″ | 42″ | 44″ | 46″ | 48″ | 50″ | 52″ | 54″ | 56″ | 58″ | 60″

For requirements outside the standard B16.47 range, such as larger custom-diameter flanges, manufacturing can be discussed according to customer drawings, dimensions and project requirements.

Standard B16.47 range: NPS 26″–60″

Custom large diameter flange: Subject to drawing and technical review.

This distinction is important for buyers: a custom 70″ or 80″ flange should not automatically be described as an ASME B16.47 flange, because B16.47 itself covers NPS 26 through NPS 60.

ASME B16.47 Series A & Series B Flanges

This standard covers two distinct series of flanges: Series A (formerly MSS SP-44) and Series B (formerly API 605). While both series cover large diameters, they are not interchangeable due to differences in bolt circle diameters and dimensions.

Feature Series A Flange Series B Flange
Design Intent Heavier, thicker, and physically larger. Compact, lighter, and more economical.
Bolting Fewer but larger diameter bolts. More numerous but smaller diameter bolts.
Applications New pipeline projects with high external loads. Refining and replacement where space is limited.
Gasket Pressure Higher bolt tension for extreme sealing. Designed for lower bolt load requirements.

Series A Flanges
Series A is commonly selected for large diameter pipeline and industrial piping applications where the project specification calls for the Series A dimensional configuration.

Series B Flanges
Series B provides another dimensional configuration for large diameter flanges and is also used across industrial piping and equipment connections.

Note:

JS FITTINGS recommends Series A for high-pressure industrial pipelines and Series B for commercial refinery retrofits.

ASME B16.47 Flange Types

Large Diameter Weld Neck Flanges

Weld Neck Flanges are commonly selected for demanding piping systems where the flange-to-pipe connection requires a welded, tapered-hub design.

Typical applications include:

  • Oil and gas pipelines
  • Refineries
  • Petrochemical plants
  • Power plants
  • Process piping
  • Large diameter transmission systems

For projects requiring a specific bore, schedule or pipe wall thickness, the flange bore should be confirmed before production.

Large Diameter Blind Flanges

Blind flanges are used to close the end of a piping system, equipment nozzle or pipeline section.

Typical applications include:

  • Pipeline isolation
  • Pressure testing
  • Maintenance
  • Equipment connections
  • Future expansion points

Blind flange dimensions, pressure class, facing and material should match the mating connection and project specification.

Custom Large Diameter Flanges

Not every industrial project uses a standard stock configuration.

JS FITTINGS can review customer drawings and project specifications for requirements involving:

  • Non-standard bore
  • Special facing
  • Special drilling
  • Custom dimensions
  • Special material
  • Special marking
  • Special inspection
  • OEM requirements

Send the drawing together with the required quantity and material specification for technical review.

ASME B16.47 Flange Facing Options

Common requirements include:

Raised Face — RF

A common facing configuration for industrial piping and process applications.

Flat Face — FF

Used for specific piping and equipment connections where a flat-face configuration is required.

Ring Type Joint — RTJ

Used in selected high-pressure and critical service applications where the project specification requires a ring-type joint connection.

If you are replacing an existing flange, providing the facing type and a dimensional drawing can help avoid ordering errors.

Quality Inspection & Documentation

For industrial buyers, a flange is not complete when it leaves the machining line. Material traceability, dimensions and documentation are also part of the purchasing requirement.

JS FITTINGS can arrange inspection and documentation according to order requirements.

Available Inspection

  • Chemical composition verification
  • Mechanical property verification
  • Dimensional inspection
  • Visual inspection
  • Ultrasonic testing
  • PMI
  • Additional NDT according to requirements
  • Third-party inspection upon request

Documentation

  • Material Test Certificate
  • EN 10204 3.1 MTC
  • Dimensional inspection records
  • Inspection reports
  • Packing list
  • Certificate of origin
  • Other project documents when required

The exact inspection plan and documentation package should be confirmed before production.
