Butt Weld Pipe Fittings And Flanges Manufacturer Since 1983

Industrial Steel Pipe Flanges FAQ

As a premier Forged Flange Manufacturer in China with over 40 years of experience, JS FITTINGS provides this comprehensive FAQ to help engineers, procurement specialists, and distributors navigate the complexities of industrial steel flanges.

1. What is a Forged Flange and why is it preferred over casting?

In critical piping systems, forged steel flanges are almost always preferred over casting. Forging refines the grain structure of the metal, eliminating internal porosity and gas pockets. This results in superior mechanical properties, higher impact strength, and better fatigue resistance, which is essential for high pressure forged flanges used in oil, gas, and chemical industries.

2. Flange Types and Their Best Use Cases

Which flange type should I select for my specific scenario?

WN: Weld Neck Flange (WNRF)

Best Scenario: High-pressure, high-temperature, or extreme cold environments where the joint is subject to vibration or stress.

Feature: The long tapered hub provides excellent reinforcement.

SO: Slip On Flange (SORF)

Best Scenario: Low-pressure applications (Class 150/300) where cost-efficiency and ease of installation are priorities.

Feature: It slides over the pipe and is welded both inside and out.

BL: Blind Flange (Blank Flange)

Best Scenario: To seal the end of a pipe flange system or a pressure vessel opening.

Feature: It must withstand higher stress than any other flange type.

SW: Socket Weld Flange – Best for small-diameter, high-pressure piping where internal flow turbulence is not a major concern.

TH: Threaded Flange (Screwed) – Best for extremely explosive areas where welding is hazardous (e.g., gas stations).

Specialty Flanges: We also manufacture Lap Joint Flanges (LJ) for frequent cleaning, Orifice Flanges for flow measurement, and Spectacle Blinds Flanges for positive isolation.

3. Standards and Dimensions

What is the difference between ASME B16.5 and ASME B16.47?

  • ASME B16.5 Flange: Covers sizes from 1/2″ to 24″. This is the most common industry standard.
  • ASME B16.47 Flange: Specifically for large diameter pipe flanges from 26″ to 60″. It includes Series A and Series B specifications.

International Standards: For European or Asian projects, we provide EN 1092-1 Flanges, DIN Flanges, JIS B2220 Flanges, BS 4504, and GOST Flanges.

4. Materials and Metallurgy

How does material selection affect performance?

Category Standard Grade & Application
Carbon Steel ASTM A105 / A105N (Normalized) – Standard for ambient and high-temp service.
Stainless Steel SS304 / SS316L – SS316L is mandatory for marine/acidic environments.
Alloy Steel ASTM A182 F11/F12/F22 – High-temperature power plant service.
Low Temp ASTM A350 LF2 – Industry standard for sub-zero environments.
Duplex Steel Duplex 2205/2507 – Extreme strength and chloride resistance.

5. How to choose the right Pressure Rating and Facing?

Pressure Ratings: We supply Class 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500 (corresponding to PN10, PN16, PN25, PN40, PN64).

Facing Types (Sealing Surfaces):

  • RF (Raised Face): The standard facing for most industrial flanges.
  • FF (Flat Face): Used for low-pressure systems with cast iron valves.
  • RTJ (Ring Type Joint): The safest choice for oil and gas flanges above Class 600.

6. Procurement Guide: How to Inquire & Order

To ensure you receive the most competitive price list and a technically compliant quote, please include these six parameters:

1. Type 2. Standard 3. Pipe Size 4. Class/PN 5. Material Grade 6. Facing

Optional but helpful: Wall thickness (Schedule) for WN flanges and any custom machining requirements.
