Buttweld 180 Degree Pipe Return Bends
Long & Short Radius U-Bends
JS FITTINGS is a specialized manufacturer of high-precision buttweld 180-degree returns (also known as U-bends). Engineered for critical heat transfer applications and space-constrained piping, our 180° returns provide a seamless, leak-proof flow reversal solution that outperforms fabricated miters in structural integrity and flow efficiency.
180° Return Configurations: LR vs. SR
The performance of a 180-degree return is defined by its bend radius, which determines the distance between the inlet and outlet pipes.
Long Radius (LR) 180° Returns
The radius (R) is 1.5 times the nominal pipe size (NPS). The center-to-center dimension is 3D. These are preferred for systems requiring lower pressure drop and smoother flow.
Short Radius (SR) 180° Returns
The radius (R) is equal to the NPS (1.0D). The center-to-center dimension is 2D. SR returns are indispensable for tight bundle heat exchangers and compact skid designs (manufactured per ASME B16.9 or B16.28).

Why JS FITTINGS 180° Returns Stand Out
- ✔Controlled Ovality: We ensure the cross-section remains circular throughout the tight 180° bend to prevent flow obstruction.
- ✔Wall Thickness Integrity: Advanced mandrel forming prevents excessive thinning on the extrados (outer curve), maintaining the pressure rating.
- ✔Dimensional Precision: Accurate Center-to-Center (V) and Back-to-Face (O) dimensions ensure a perfect fit into tubesheets.
- ✔Heat Treatment: Full solution annealing or normalizing post-bending to restore mechanical properties and eliminate work hardening.

Quality Control & Documentation
- Mill Test Certificate (EN 10204 3.1) with every delivery.
- PMI Testing for stainless and alloy steel components.
- Dimensional Verification Reports for critical tolerances.
- Packaging: Securely packed in seaworthy wooden cases with internal bracing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How is the Center-to-Center dimension calculated for a 180° return?
A: For a Long Radius (LR) 180° return, the center-to-center distance is 3 × NPS. For a Short Radius (SR) version, it is 2 × NPS.
Q: Can 180° returns be supplied in heavy wall thicknesses?
A: Yes. JS FITTINGS specializes in heavy-wall returns (SCH 160 or XXS) using induction heating to form components without structural failure.
Q: Are custom radius 180° returns available?
A: While LR and SR are standard, we can manufacture custom-radius U-bends (3D, 5D, etc.) to meet specific engineering designs.
